1 John 5:11-12

God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  Whoever possesses the Son possesses life.  Whoever does not possess the Son of God does not possess life.

What does it mean "to possess" the Son?  Merriam Webster dictionary defines the word "possess" as "to take into ones possession" or "to have and hold as property" or "to enter into and control firmly".  None of these definitions quite fits the meaning in this verse, but they do give us an indication of what is meant.  When we enter into a close relationship with Jesus and hold him in our hearts, we will have entered into a life without end.  For Jesus is eternal.  He always was, always is, and always will be.  He is the "I am" incarnate.  With him, there is no death- only life.  For he conquered death once and for all when he rose on Easter Sunday.  We who believe in him and love him, share in his resurrection.

He lives to take away my shame
And He lives forever, I'll proclaim
That the payment for my sin
Was the precious life He gave
But now He's alive and
There's an empty grave

And I know my Redeemer lives
I know my Redeemer lives
Let all creation testify
Let this life within me cry
I know my Redeemer lives
